City Council virtual meeting on March 24

Brookhaven, GA, Mar. 23, 2020 – The Brookhaven City Council will conduct its next regularly scheduled business meeting on March 24, at 7 p.m.  However, in consideration of social distancing recommendations by the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and State Board of Health, the meeting will be held via video conference.

Brookhaven cancels Easter events

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brookhaven, GA, March 19, 2020 – The City of Brookhaven announces the cancellation of its Easter events – Eggstra-ordinary Easter Egg Hunt, Dog Gone Easter Egg Hunt, and Easter Egg Scramble – due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are disappointed that we have to cancel these popular events, but this is a necessary step the City of Brookhaven has to take in preventing the spread of this dangerous virus,” said Parks and Recreation Director Brian Borden. “We look forward to these events returning next year.”

Restaurants and bars close dine-in service to prevent spread of COVID-19

 

Brookhaven, GA, Mar. 16, 2020 – Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst called a Special Called Meeting of the City Council for the purpose of an emergency declaration and suspending dine-in service for all Brookhaven restaurants and alcohol-serving establishments.

Brookhaven Police Announce Temporary Department Changes Due to COVID-19

Effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020 and continuing through March 30, 2020, Brookhaven Police Headquarters will be closed to the public. The Brookhaven Municipal Court -which is housed in the same building as Police Headquarters- will also close to the public.

During this closure, routine administrative services performed in the lobby of Police Headquarters will be temporarily discontinued, including records requests, permit applications, and background checks. In addition, non-emergency calls for service where a suspect is not on scene will be handled by telephone.

Brookhaven City Hall closed to public until March 30

Brookhaven, GA, Mar. 14, 2020 – On the evening of March 13, a non-public facing Brookhaven City Hall employee notified management that they had tested positive for Coronavirus.  Therefore, City Hall will be closed to the public until March 30, and City Hall employees are being directed to self-quarantine or self-monitor per CDC guidelines.

Brookhaven announces cancellation of Brookhaven Counts Festival

Brookhaven, GA, March 12, 2020 – The City of Brookhaven announces the cancellation of the Brookhaven Counts Festival, Saturday, March 14 in an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 virus, which was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11.

The City will continue to work with the Brookhaven Complete Count Committee to ensure that every member of our community has the opportunity to stand up and be counted in the 2020 Census.

Brookhaven, GA, March 12, 2020 – The City of Brookhaven announces the cancellation of the 2020 Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival, March 28 and 29, in an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 virus, which was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11. The Cherry Blossom Festival 5K scheduled for March 21 is also cancelled.

DeKalb County to Announce New Emergency Medical Services Hub in Brookhaven

Multiple pipe failures are the cause for expedited repairs

Brookhaven, Ga, Feb. 27, 2020 – “This problem has been dozens of years in the making, and now it is a critical emergency,” noted Brookhaven Public Works Director Hari Karikaran as he  stood at the intersection of Inman Drive and Saybrook Drive, an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other. Brookhaven City Council discusses dementia awareness

Brookhaven, Ga, Feb. 19, 2020 – The Brookhaven City Council addressed the important topic of mental health, specifically dementia and its impact on the community at large, at the Feb. 11 work session meeting.

“This is an opportunity for us to listen and then learn what we can do as a community to help those afflicted with dementia,” said Mayor Pro Tempore Joe Gebbia. “We’re looking at instituting programs that will enhance the quality of life for not only those affected, but their families as well.”

Brookhaven uses technology to reduce school zone speeding

Brookhaven, Ga, Feb. 11, 2020 – In response to residents’ concerns, Brookhaven police conducted a study of traffic volume and speeders in school zones during school hours.  In just three school zones, more than 3,000 vehicles were found to be speeding at least 11 miles per hour over the speed limit.  The study was completed in a single day.

At its regular business meeting on Tuesday, the Brookhaven City Council unanimously approved a contract with RedSpeed for automated speed enforcement in school zones with automated speed detection cameras.

Come help plant trees in Blackburn Park for Arbor Day

Brookhaven, GA, Feb. 13, 2020 -- Celebrate Arbor Day this year by helping plant new trees in Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road, with the City of Brookhaven and Trees Atlanta on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Great for all ages, the event involves digging holes, mulching, watering and cleaning up around the planting area. No prior experience is required and Trees Atlanta will provide all tools and instruction.

Brookhaven Finance Department wins Excellence in Financial Reporting

Brookhaven, Ga, Feb. 11, 2020 – For yet another year the City of Brookhaven’s Finance Department has won the Excellence in Financial Reporting Award from the Government Finance Officers Association.  This is the fourth consecutive year Brookhaven has earned this award.

The award, which is the highest form of recognition for government financial reporting and accounting, according to the Government Finance Officers Association, was given to the City’s Finance Department for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for 2018.
