City closing recreation centers, suspending youth and athletic league events

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

****These closings also include the Ashford Park building and the Blackburn Park Tennis Center***

Brookhaven, GA, March 12, 2020 – The City of Brookhaven is temporarily closing the Lynwood Park Recreation Center and the Briarwood Recreation Center in an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 virus, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11. The closings are effective Friday, March 13, through at least April 3.

The closing of the recreation centers will include all youth and adult classes and programs, youth and adult athletic programs, and open gym at both locations.

Along with the closing of the recreation centers, the Parks & Recreation Department will suspend all youth and adult athletic events at Murphey Candler Park and Blackburn Park.

The City will re-evaluate the closures as the situation allows.

The City of Brookhaven advises residents to continue following these preventative measure recommendations from the Georgia Department of Public Health:

• Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
