Planting trees at 2019 Brookhaven Arbor Day event

Brookhaven, GA, Feb. 13, 2020 -- Celebrate Arbor Day this year by helping plant new trees in Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road, with the City of Brookhaven and Trees Atlanta on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Great for all ages, the event involves digging holes, mulching, watering and cleaning up around the planting area. No prior experience is required and Trees Atlanta will provide all tools and instruction.

Arbor Day is observed annually in all 50 states, usually in early spring, and celebrates the role trees play in our lives today and into the future. The best time to plant trees in Georgia is between November and mid-March because it gives trees a chance to become established before the hot, dry period of summer. That is why Arbor Day is celebrated earlier every year in Georgia.

Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian because tree planting can be physically challenging and those under 16 may need assistance from adults. Youngsters can participate by massaging the tree's root ball to loosen it, filling the holes back in, and mulching and watering the trees. Kids are really great at naming trees, too!

The project will take place, rain or shine, so check the weather beforehand and come prepared. Long pants are recommended as you'll be kneeling on the ground. All volunteers need closed-toed shoes or boots, clothes that can get dirty, sunscreen and bug spray as needed, and drinking water in reusable containers only.

All volunteers are asked to sign up in advance so organizers can provide enough tools for everyone. More details, a map to the exact location and info about what to wear/bring can be found on the registration page at https://www.treesatlanta.org/get-involved/events/tree-planting-in-blackburn-park-a0V5w00000IWzPeEAL.
