Sidewalk improvements get underway in Brookhaven

Improvements will make walkways safer and more accessible for all

Brookhaven, GA, Sept. 4, 2020 – Sidewalk improvements are underway along several roadways throughout Brookhaven.  These improvements will rectify several maintenance issues and bring several access points into ADA compliance.

Earlier this summer, the City contracted with Lowe Engineers for a comprehensive physical assessment, inspection and GPS mapping of all Brookhaven sidewalks.  This assessment included ascertaining sidewalk condition, obstructions, ADA ramp conditions and locations where ADA ramps should be, but do not exist.

“The City adopted a long-range strategy for sidewalk connectivity throughout Brookhaven, providing a safe alternative to automotive traffic,” said Public Works Director Hari Karikaran.  “While all of our new sidewalks meet or exceed current standards, some of the older ones constructed before cityhood need attention.”

The Brookhaven City Council approved $50,000 for sidewalk maintenance in 2020, and every year moving forward. In addition, Brookhaven solicited bids through a transparent and competitive process and selected a construction firm to perform maintenance work which began Thursday.

ADA ramp repair work will occur on sidewalks located on Corporate Blvd, Dresden Drive, E. Roxboro Road, Windsor Parkway, Johnson Ferry Road, Standard Drive and W. Brookhaven Drive.

Other sidewalk maintenance issues will be addressed on Chantily Drive, Sheridan Road, Sheridan Court, Sheridan Park and Brookvalley Lane in LaVista Park.
