Brookhaven accepts funding for Nancy Creek streambank restoration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brookhaven, GA, Aug. 30, 2018 – The City of Brookhaven received a major boost this month from the United States Environmental Agency (EPA) in support of the Nancy Creek Watershed Improvement Plan (WIP).

At its Aug. 28 meeting, the City Council accepted $200,000 in EPA funding to offset the cost of streambank restoration on the north fork of the Creek, south of Murphey Candler. The work will not only restore a healthy environment, but will also beautify the waterway as it passes through Murphey Candler Park’s baseball and softball fields.

The City has been steadily working on the Nancy Creek WIP since its adoption in late 2016. Recommended shoreline restoration on the east side of the Lake will continue through this year with Phase 4 of that project starting up in November. The City has included the Plan’s recommendation for dredging Murphey Candler Lake in the November 2018 Parks Bond Referendum. In April of this year, the City was notified by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GEPD) that it has recommended an additional $350,000 in EPA funding for streambank restoration north of Murphey Candler Lake.

“Restoration and protection of the Nancy Creek and Peachtree Creek watersheds are long overdue,” said Mayor John Ernst. “Our partnership and progress with the GEPD will help us address regional environmental issues and assist us in reclaiming the natural beauty of these waters as they flow through our community.”

Design south of the lake will begin in 2018, with construction planned for the 2019-20 off-season so as to avoid interference with league play.
