Brookhaven to hold public hearings for 2020 millage rate

Brookhaven, GA, June 1, 2020 – Residents are encouraged to attend upcoming public hearings for the 2020 millage rate. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all public hearings on the 2020 millage rate will be held on a virtual platform on Zoom.  The virtual meeting links will be posted on the City of Brookhaven website: https://brookhavenga.gov/ 72 hours before each meeting.

The first will be held Tuesday, June 9, at 7 p.m. The second will be held Tuesday June 23, at 10:00 a.m.  The third and final public hearing will be held Tuesday June 23, at 7:00 p.m.  After the final public hearing, the 2020 millage rate will be formally adopted at the June 23 meeting at 7 p.m.

In November 2019, the Brookhaven City Council adopted a balanced 2020 general fund budget totaling $46.8 million in direct expenditures, defined as the total of all 12 funds minus interfund transfers. The general fund budget, which funds the day-to-day operations of the City of Brookhaven, totals $27.6 million.  The anticipated millage rate in 2020 is 2.74 mills, the same rate which has been in effect since 2016.

Due to the revaluation of real property tax assessments, the proposed 2.74 millage rate results in an increase in property tax by 4.34 percent under the Rollback Millage rate.  Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 2.626 mills.

For example, the tax decrease based on the difference between the rollback and the proposed millage rate for a homesteaded property with a fair market value of $532,423 would be approximately $24.28, and the proposed increase for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $1,563035 is about $64.92.

Due to a significant annexation that occurred in 2019, the beginning numbers for calculation of the 2020 rollback rate are different from the previous period.

Per the city charter, Brookhaven’s millage rate is capped at 3.35.
