Brookhaven updates progress on the implementation of SJREC recommendations

Brookhaven, GA, Jan. 30, 2023 Approximately one year after the Brookhaven Social Justice, Race and Equity Commission (SJREC) presented its recommendations to the Brookhaven City Council, the Administration presented a report on the progress at the City Council Advance on Jan. 28.

Formed in December 2020, the 37-member, all-volunteer, citizen-led SJREC was tasked by Brookhaven's Mayor and City Council to review and make recommendations regarding the City’s mission and vision statements; policies and procedures across hiring, procurement, and policing; and community engagement.

After nearly 12 months of work, the SJREC presented its final report to the Mayor and City Council on Dec. 14, 2021. In a report titled “Building Community. Kindling Hope. Seeding Change.”, the SJREC submitted 18 overarching recommendations to expand efforts toward racial equity and social justice throughout the Brookhaven community and City government.

“Brookhaven realizes the gravity of the ongoing issues of diversity, equity and inclusion, and takes the recommendations of the SJREC and the City Council-approved implementation plan seriously,” said City Manager Christian Sigman. “The good news is that we have made progress on all of the recommendations over the past year.  Having said that, we are not finished -we have more work ahead of us in 2023 and we will continue to improve.”

The SJREC Final Report, the original Implementation Plan, and the one-year update are all posted on the City website at www.BrookhavenGA.gov/SJREC.
