The Brookhaven Beat: A glimpse into the work of Brookhaven Police

Brookhaven, GA, Feb. 4, 2019 – During the week of Jan. 28 – Feb. 3, Brookhaven Police answered 2,374 calls for service.  This includes 128 incident reports, 182 citations and 29 arrests.  This is a sampling of some of those calls:

Sun. Feb 3 - Marijuana Possession, 2700 Block of Buford Hwy:  During a routine traffic stop, officers noticed a strong odor of marijuana was emanating from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a large amount of marijuana. None of the five occupants took ownership, so all five were taken into custody and transported to DeKalb Jail. Three of the five had active warrants from several agencies.

Sat. Feb. 2 – DUI, 3000 Block of Buford Hwy – At 4:42 a.m., a police officer witnessed a motor vehicle accident at this location. The driver who caused the crash then attempted to drive away from the scene but was stopped by the officer.  The driver was injured, and an ambulance was called.  The driver had slurred speech and a strong smell of alcohol.

Sat. Feb. 2 – LPR Traffic Stop, 3200 Block of Buford Hwy - Officers received a License Plate Reader (LPR) alert for a vehicle with a stolen license plate on NE Expwy near Briarwood Rd. The vehicle was soon stopped near Northeast Plaza and two occupants were detained.

Sat. Feb. 2 - Aggravated Assault, 3500 Block of Buford Hwy - Officers responded to a call for a domestic dispute. While on scene, officers learned the male party in this incident was released from jail after being arrested for domestic violence towards the female party.  Today, the female took a bottle and beat the male with it while holding their infant child. The female was arrested and transported to DeKalb Jail. The male was cited for being in possession of marijuana.

Fri. Feb. 1 – LPR Stolen Vehicle, 3600 Block of Clairmont Rd - Officers initiated a traffic stop on a Porsche Panamera at the Race Track following a LPR alert for a stolen vehicle.  The Porsche was confirmed stolen and towed. A passenger in the vehicle had an active warrant from College Park Police department and was taken to DeKalb Jail. The driver was not charged because the “registered owner” of the vehicle confirmed he authorized the driver to have possession of the vehicle.  The Illinois Secretary of State confirms that the Porsche has a cloned VIN number from Canada, so the investigation continues

Fri. Feb. 1 – Battery, 4300 Block of Chamblee Dunwoody Rd - Officers responded to a hotel when a subject in the lobby requested medical assistance. The complainant states he and a friend were wrestling in their room and the friend punched him repeatedly about his head and face. The suspect fled the scene and the complainant called 911 30 minutes after he left.  The subject would not identify the assailant and there was another witness who also refused to cooperate with the investigation.

Thurs. Jan. 31 - Fraud-Forgery of Check, 2000 Block of Johnson Ferry Rd – Police responded to a report of a subject attempting to cash a $25,000 fraudulent check at a bank at this location. The subject was arrested and transported to the county jail.

Wed. Jan. 30 - Theft by Receiving Auto, 1700 Block of Briarwood Rd -Officers were called to the intersection of Buford Highway and Briarwood Road about a stolen vehicle. The victim stated that he observed his stolen vehicle turn onto Briarwood Road from Buford Highway. The victim followed the vehicle to the far north end of the parking lot. Upon the officer’s arrival, three suspects exited the vehicle and walked behind the apartment building. Two suspects, a male and a female were immediately detained. The third suspect fled on foot. The driver of the vehicle was charged with theft by receiving. The second suspect was charged with loitering. The suspects were transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
