Phase II of Murphey Candler shoreline project begins in November

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The objective is to prevent further erosion

Brookhaven, GA, Aug. 17, 2018 – The next phase of the Murphey Candler Lake Shoreline Restoration Project is moving forward, thanks to the City Council’s unanimous approval of $99,300 for the project at this week’s Council meeting. The lake is located at Murphey Candler Park, 1551 West Nancy Creek Drive.

“The project is a continuation of work started in early 2017 on Phase I where 100 feet of eroding shoreline was addressed,” said Brian Borden, Director of Brookhaven Parks and Recreation  “At that time, workers installed limestone and granite stones that served a dual purpose of creating a tiered seating area along the lake shore and slowing down the erosion process. This new phase, covering the next 300 feet of shoreline and again using granite and limestone rock, will pick up where Phase I left off and continue around to the lake’s newly-installed pedestrian bridge.”

“This project is a part of the Murphey Candler Park Master Plan,” said Linley Jones, District 1 Councilwoman. “The work being done will improve the shoreline, help stop erosion, and give people more amenities to come down and enjoy at the lake and on the waterfront. This is yet another example of how the hard work that went into all of the master plans for our parks is coming to fruition and making Brookhaven’s parks wonderful gathering spots for residents.”

Work on the project, to be performed by Willow Construction, Inc., is set to begin in mid-November once the final stream buffer variance is received from the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.  The project should be completed in early 2019.
