NEW DATE AND TIME: Brookhaven announces groundbreaking for universally accessible playground at Murphey Candler Park

Calendar Date:

Brookhaven, GA, Oct. 12, 2018 – Thanks to an innovative partnership, construction is about to begin on a brand new, ADA-accessible playground at Brookhaven’s Murphey Candler Park.  A ceremonial groundbreaking will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. at the park on 1551 W. Nancy Creek, between the pool house and the Sea Scout Hut.

The project was made possible by the partnership of the Murphey Candler Park Conservancy (MCPC) and a $75,000 grant from Resurgens Charitable Foundation.

“This universally inclusive playground is going to be a wonderful addition to Murphey Candler Park,” said District 1 Councilmember Linley Jones. “We are grateful for the hard work of the MCPC, which has been improving the park and allowing it to thrive for many years even before Brookhaven became a city.”

Brookhaven’s parks project team, led by GreenbergFarrow, held a series of hands-on community workshops, which included the community’s young people.  The youth were encouraged to voice and draw their ideas of the elements that they would like to have in their future playgrounds.  The ideas that they shared resulted in the programing of the Murphey Candler Park Nature Play Zone, which is focused on the creation of a facility that is welcoming, useable and enjoyable for children of all abilities.  This universally accessible nature play zone will include:

1.  Entry Infinity Symbol Mosaic

2.  Family-Sized Basket Swings

3.  Musical Instrument Zone

4.  Caulk Board Drawing Zone

5.  Two Chutes and Ladders Natural Climbing and Slide Zones

The playground is expected to be completed by next spring, weather permitting.

“We are excited that this grant allows us to build a playground that meets all the needs of our youngest citizens here in Brookhaven,” said Brookhaven Parks & Recreation Director Brian Borden.

The MCPC is a 501c3 non-profit run by area residents.  More information can be found at www.murpheycandlerpark.org.
