Murphey Candler parking lot near completion

Brookhaven, GA, April 24, 2019 – The City of Brookhaven project to improve and greatly expand the parking lot at Murphey Candler Park has been delayed due to an unusually wet winter and spring as well as a delayed start due to construction coordination with the football leagues last fall.

“The project is proceeding from a milestone perspective very well, but the weather has pushed the reopening of the parking lot into conflicts with the Murphey Candler Fast Pitch Association and Murphey Candler Baseball season,” said City Manager Christian Sigman. “We apologize for any inconvenience and encourage users of the park to ride-share and seek alternatives until the project is complete in the coming weeks.”

The installation of curb stops is underway.  The remaining work of striping will occur once the concrete passes inspection.  Specifically, the concrete must meet the technical specification of 4,000 PSI within 28 days of installation. Core samples of the 270 cubic yards of concrete poured were tested at seven and 14 days, and these were trending toward the material specification.  Day 14 of the concrete curing was April 22.

Sigman added, “We expect the concrete will meet specifications within the next two weeks.  The next test will take place April 30.  While it appears no work is actually happening on the site, the contractors cannot wrap up the striping until the concrete is accepted by the City.  We expect the concrete to cure to specifications, but if it does not, the contractor will have to remove and reinstall the concrete at their expense.”

The Murphey Candler parking lot project will increase the parking at Murphey Candler to more than 100 spaces and will improve drainage in the area.  The contract was awarded to Woodwind Construction for $400,000.

“As one who is at the park almost every weekday as a coach, I am impacted by the parking situation and frustrated at the rain delays just like everyone else,” said Mayor John Ernst. “I appreciate the patience and understanding of all our friends and neighbors as we make Murphey Candler the very best it can be.”
