FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brookhaven, GA, Aug. 30, 2018 – The City of Brookhaven and the Lynwood Park Foundation are working to secure a Georgia State Historical Marker for the Lynwood Park Recreation Center. The City Council has unanimously approved an application be submitted to the Georgia Historical Society.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the closing of the school, which means that the building is now eligible for this historic designation. In 1968, students of the school bravely integrated the DeKalb County School System. The building now serves as both a recreation center and Brookhaven Park headquarters. It is also the site of the City’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Dinner and Celebration.

“The history of the people in Lynwood Park is rich in strength, cohesiveness, determination, pride and values,” said Kathy Wells, a member of the Lynwood Park Foundation and retired principal from DeKalb County Schools. “I think the Lynwood Park Community is well overdue for an historical marker, they have already written their own history.”

“The history of the building we know as the Lynwood Recreation Center is so important to the City’s history and needs to be preserved for today’s children and future generations to understand history, not in the abstract, but in concrete,” said District 1 Councilmember Linley Jones.

Councilwoman Jones has been working with the Lynwood Park Foundation and historian Valerie Biggerstaff to secure the designation. The application will be submitted to the Georgia Historical Society by Sept. 1.
