New fencing enhances Blackburn Park appearance

A new decorative fence and granite pillars provide a landscaping facelift for Blackburn Park.

Park referendum monies fund the project

Brookhaven, GA, Aug. 29, 2019 -- A portion of Blackburn Park’s perimeter took a dramatic turn lately with the installation of granite pillars and new decorative wooden rails to enhance its overall visual appeal. The striking upgrade replaced a previous split wooden fence.

“The fence portion is about a quarter-mile long,” said Parks and Recreation Director Brian Borden, “and improved the landscape along Ashford Dunwoody Road. It is consistent with much of the stone and wood improvements done in other Brookhaven parks. Safety wasn’t overlooked either. There are some openings along the fence line that would allow for people to exit should there be an emergency.”

Blackburn Park is home to two of the City’s marquee events: the Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival and Light Up Brookhaven. “The new fencing was just one of the upgrades planned for Blackburn utilizing bond referendum monies,” said Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst. “Also planned before the end of the year are projects including renovating an entire parking lot, adding a new asphalt surface and resetting granite curbs. The south entry drive is being realigned specifically to save a 50’ oak tree.”

As weather cools later this fall, additional trees, shrubs and plants will be added to beautify the scenic park grounds.

The park upgrade is being done as a part of the Brookhaven Parks Bond Referendum renovation project and was specified in the City’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan, compiled with a vast amount of resident input.
