Light Up Brookhaven 2020 this Wednesday launches holiday cheer

Brookhaven virtual tree lighting is Wed., Dec. 2

Brookhaven, GA, Dec. 1, 2020 – With a pinch of tradition and a pound of innovation, Brookhaven City leaders are determined to deliver holiday cheer despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, starting with the annual lighting of the City’s holiday tree and menorah.

The twist this year is that each councilmember will deliver holiday greetings from their homes, culminating with a grand finale lighting by Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst in Blackburn Park.  The public is invited to tune in to the event on Facebook Live on the City’s Facebook account at @BrookhavenGAGov beginning at 6 p.m. on Dec.2.

“Relying upon our proven #BrookhavenStrong resilience, there is no reason we can’t all look forward to the holidays and a brighter, happier 2021,” said Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst. “Public safety guidelines make it impossible for the public to attend our traditional holiday event in person, but with a little creativity we can still launch the season successfully with all of the pomp, twinkle and beauty of the holiday season. The holidays are for children and, in our small way this year, we are determined to deliver, especially for them.”

To spread the holiday cheer even further across Brookhaven, another element of Light Up Brookhaven centers around a citywide yard decoration contest for residents and businesses. The top three winners in each category will get a plaque and/or yard sign to let everyone know their display won.

Explore Brookhaven will create driving maps of all entries to serve as a guide and the effort will be publicized to surrounding towns to bring others to Brookhaven for a fun, free and socially distanced viewing of all the lights. To download the map, go to www.explorebrookhaven.com.

The decorative lighting contest will be judged on Dec. 7 with winners announced Dec. 14 (so start decorating NOW). To enter the decorative lighting contest or get answers to any other questions, contact Mallory Izbicki at Mallory.Izbicki@BrookhavenGA.gov.
