Community feedback needed on Arts + Culture Strategic Plan

Brookhaven Arts + Culture Strategic Plan

Deadline for input is Aug 3

Brookhaven, GA –July 21, 2020 -- Not that many years ago, any discussion of arts and culture in Brookhaven may have simply referenced a day trip to the Oglethorpe or High museums or a concert by the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra.

Not so today. As the City has moved grown and progressed since incorporation in 2012, the local arts and culture scene has continuously morphed to meet the everchanging needs of Brookhaven’s diverse residential and business base.

Nearly two years ago, the Brookhaven City Council appointed the Brookhaven Arts Advisory Committee to develop an arts and culture strategic plan that identifies and evaluates potential public, performing, visual and cultural art projects. That time-intensive challenge, identified as the Arts + Culture Strategic Plan, has been achieved and the plan can now be seen at http://ow.ly/9neD30qYBHy.

The Committee conducted over 12 months of community outreach and is once again asking for public input. Residents are being asked to view the final draft and offer comments. The deadline to provide input is Aug. 3 so suggestions can be incorporated into the plan before presenting to City Council in August.  To provide your input, send comments to Artsandculture@BrookhavenGA.gov

"I have found Brookhaven to be a city of engaged and passionate communities,” said Elizabeth Peterson, Brookhaven Arts Advisory Committee Chairperson.  “When Brookhaven 'does art' everyone participates! A perfect example of this was the spring 2020, Brookhaven Strong Art Contest which inspired artists of all ages to reflect on and depict moments of positive support, caring, and bravery in the face of considerable challenges.”

“The arts bring us hope, solace, humor, and a vision beyond our current circumstances,” Peterson continued.  “Looking forward, we have with this plan a beautiful framework to take our existing vibrant and diverse resources and grow our shared love of the arts and our city. I am very inspired by the Arts Brookhaven plan as a richly imagined visioning document that will guide us into our next chapter and transform us into a destination city for the arts in the Southeast.”

“The Arts + Culture Strategic Plan is a true vision for culture and creativity in Brookhaven,” said Mayor John Ernst. “Just as we have master plans for other major City departments like Public Works and Parks and Recreation, this plan will be yet another valuable tool to help make Brookhaven the best that it can be for our residents and businesses. I really hope residents will take this opportunity to contribute their thoughts and wishes so that the plan truly reflects the City’s diverse demographic.”
