Brookhaven, GA, May 1, 2020 -- While the coronavirus has turned our everyday world upside down, the Brookhaven Police Department (BPD) has continued to smoothly do its job and protect the community. Alongside other first responders such as health providers, EMTs, etc., the BPD has demonstrated incredible flexibility and commitment to getting the job done. In recognition of their “above and beyond” performance, a new outlet has been created for the public to express their appreciation: #BrookhavenStrong Kudos for Cops.

Kudos for Cops is a program designed for the public to say “thank you” to BPD officers and staff by submitting letters of appreciation and/or drawings for their efforts in keeping Brookhaven safe through this tough time.

In addition to their normal law enforcement duties, they have had to give special attention to encouraging social distancing, urging people to shelter in place and educating the public as to the special health guidelines needed to navigate the viral storm. On multiple occasions, BPD officers and staff have gone that extra mile by bringing joy to youngsters with drive-by birthday salutations, delivering donated meals to other essential workers such as the DeKalb Fire and Publix employees, and worked hard to keep residents informed on social media and to respond to numerous inquiries and requests.

Officers and staff participated in the Brookhaven Barry Bear Hunt and tried to engage kids by posting coloring book pages. They also shared the #BrookhavenStrong broadcast over patrol cars loud speakers at several areas in the city.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to express your gratitude personally, Kudos for Cops is the perfect solution. Beginning Monday, May 5 through Friday, May 8, submit a thank you note, share an experience or provide a drawing of anything related to the BPD and how they’ve performed during the COVID-19 crisis. From May 11-15, BPD officers will be personally reading and sharing submitted stories on the City of Brookhaven Police Facebook page and other City social media outlets.

Brookhaven residents have, in recent weeks, expressed their appreciation for these efforts through meals prepared and donated to BPD officers and staff, groups have donated face masks and kids have even painted rocks and sold special t-shirts to raise funds for the Brookhaven Police Foundation.

“The Brookhaven police team has done a great job in performing not only their day-to-day duties, but other tasks related to the pandemic,” noted Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst. “I have seen and heard many terrific stories about how our officers have made that special effort to help our residents with virus-related questions and issues. I am extremely proud of Chief Yandura and the BPD in helping all of us travel these unchartered waters. They truly represent the #BrookhavenStrong spirit.”

Submissions to Kudos for Cops can be transmitted via Facebook Messenger (to the Parks and Recreation Facebook page) or by emailing  Parks and Recreation Event Coordinator Mallory Mallory.Izbicki@BrookhavenGA.gov.
