President Joe Biden signed a bill to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States on June 9, 2021. The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865: the day that Union Army Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, and informed slaves about their emancipation. More than two years earlier, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
