The Brookhaven Fire Marshal’s Office does not have jurisdiction in a single-family home and only conducts inspections and investigates complaints on commercial properties, which includes apartment buildings. Penalties are as follows; however, fines are ultimately set by the Municipal Court Judge:
- Fines ranging from $100 to $1,000 per violation, per day
- Jail time - between 1 to 60 days maximum per violation, but not to exceed 180 days for all charges
- Alternative compliance such as demolition, order to vacate, and\or clean and close the property
- Community service
The City aims to complete residential reviews in 5 business days and commercial reviews in 10 business days. Multiple review cycles may be required.
