Steps taken by City Council to ensure dockless mobile device safety

Dockless scooters

Brookhaven, GA March 29, 2019 --- In recognition of the growing number of transportation alternatives rapidly becoming available to residents, Brookhaven City Council members have adopted legislation putting parameters into place for future regulation of dockless mobility devices. The action took place at the Council’s regular meeting on March 26.

Dockless mobile devices include, but are not limited to, electric bicycles, scooters and skateboards rented to the general public n a short-term basis.

The components of the ordinance legislation are aimed at not only public safety but meant to ensure the vendors take ultimate responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the devices, reducing the possibility of the e-scooters from randomly being left on sidewalks or carelessly discarded.

Per the guidelines, each vendor will only be allowed to have 50 devices each available for rental that must be kept in safe working order. The maximum speed allowed for each device is 15 mph and can only be operated on roads posting speed limits of 35 mph or less.

Devise operators under the age of 16 must wear a helmet and it is preferred that helmets also be worn by anyone 17 and older. Users must also yield to pedestrians, not operate a hand-held devise when riding or be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The new legislation goes into effect immediately.
