Brookhaven, GA, March 26, 2020 -- After days of isolation, it’s time for Brookhaven residents to come together symbolically and unite, from a safe distance of course, to show that we are all in this health crisis together. Taking a cue from our neighbors around the world, here is an opportunity to put our local and national pride on display, showing that we are all #BrookhavenStrong.

On Thursday, April 2, at 6 p.m., all Brookhaven residents are encouraged to tune into Facebook Live, step outside on our porches, balconies or front yards, and join neighbors in singing the Star-Spangled Banner, along with noted opera singer Kelsey Fredriksen. If you have a sound system, play it out the window!  If you have an American flag, this would be a good time to put Old Glory on display to inspire community spirit. The City will have the flag raised at various parks and facilities throughout Brookhaven.

“Our community has never experienced a crisis of this magnitude, but I know that our citizens are equipped with the strength and resolve to endure it together, even while apart,” said District 1 Council Member Linley Jones. “Unity and perseverance during times of crisis is what defines us as Americans.  This gives us an opportunity to pay homage to all of those who are suffering and sacrificing all over the world.”

It will be easy, and safe, to participate in this citywide event and still exercise social distancing:

  • Precisely at 6 p.m. this Thursday, April 2, go to your computers, tablets or phones to the Brookhaven Facebook page (www.facebook.com/BrookhavenGAGov/) and step outside your home or onto your porch.
  • Following remarks from Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst and Councilmember Jones, there will be a moment of silence observed for all of the victims around the world suffering from COVID-19.
  • Join operatic performer Kelsey Fredriksen in singing the Star-Spangled Banner. Don’t be shy!  After the national anthem feel free to sing additional songs such as America or This Land is My Land. Have fun with it.

“I am looking forward to this moment of patriotism and Brookhaven spirit as we make the very best of a difficult situation,” said Mayor John Ernst.  “We are all in this together, and this gives us all a chance to demonstrate a sense of community in a meaningful and inspiring way.”
