City Council wrap up: Highlights from the Oct. 7 meeting

Brookhaven, GA, Oct. 7, 2019 – The Brookhaven City Council acted on several items in its Oct. 7 regular business meeting at Brookhaven City Hall:

  • The Council unanimously approved a budget amendment to accept the Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) funding in the amount of $47,397.  These funds support the Brookhaven Police Department’s Pedestrian Safety Project.
  • The Council unanimously approved a contract with DAF Concrete, Inc. to construct Ashford Dunwoody Road/Johnson Ferry Road intersection improvements in an amount not to exceed $460,000.  Since the adoption of the Ashford Dunwoody Road Corridor Study on April 25, 2017, Brookhaven’s Public Works Department has completed seven of the 10 short term projects.  This intersection improvement project (ST-10) is the first major intersection improvement project in the Corridor Study.

  • The Council unanimously approved the 2019 Regional Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) Solicitation.  As the federally-designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Atlanta region, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) works with state and local transportation agencies and governments to prioritize federal funding for transportation projects. Every 2-3 years the ARC issues a call for new projects, or a “solicitation” for the TIP.  The approved solicitation places Brookhaven projects before the ARC for funding consideration.
  • The Council unanimously approved the submission of an application to the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank.  This application is for project funding toward project ST-03 of the North Druid Hills Road Corridor Study, Intersection Improvement: Briarwood Road and Oglethorpe Avenue. in the amount of $2 million in grant funds to offset the total estimated project cost of $4 - $4.5 million.
  • The Council unanimously approved a contract with MEP Associates to perform Geothermal Well Field Design for the Public Safety Building in the amount of $66,915.  MEP Associates will perform Geothermal Heat Exchanger design, test bore drilling and the installation of the heat exchanger.
