City Council wrap up: Highlights from the Oct. 23 meeting

Brookhaven, GA, Oct. 25, 2018 – The Brookhaven City Council acted on several items in its Oct. 23 meeting at Brookhaven City Hall: 

  • The Council held a public hearing and subsequently deferred Brookhaven’s Zoning Rewrite, a two-year endeavor with extensive public involvement and participation.  The measure will be on the Nov. 27 agenda.
  • Subsequently, the Council also deferred a related measure to rezone properties from existing districts to renamed districts in the proposed Zoning Ordinance Rewrite.  The measure will be on the Nov. 27 agenda.
  • The Council held its first public hearing on the Administration’s proposed budget for 2019 in the amount of $47,568,301 with a focus on implementing the plans and projects which have been previously approved.  The general fund budget, which funds the day-to-day operations of the City of Brookhaven, totals $27.7 million, a 1.55 percent increase from the 2018 revised budget.  The next public hearing will occur on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
  • The Council unanimously approved the appointment of Renee Areng as Executive Director of the Brookhaven Convention and Visitors Bureau. 
  • The Council unanimously approved a measure to extend its contract with Charles Abbot and Associates for permit and business license service through the end of 2019. 
  • The Council unanimously approved an agreement with external auditor Mauldin & Jenkins, internal auditor Bill Mulcahy.
  • The Council unanimously approved the purchase of the QuikTrip property on Buford Highway in the amount of $1,712,371, and renovation expenses of $180,000. 
  • The Council unanimously approved a resolution to establish a residential deck inspection program and temporarily waive fees for inspections and permits for deck repairs.
  • The Council unanimously approved a contract amendment with Woodwind Construction for parking lot improvements for the Creative Play Zone at Murphey Candler Park in the amount of $48,830.  This vendor was previously selected for other parking lot improvements at Lynwood and Murphey Candler Parks.
  • The Council approved changes regarding the Sunday sales of alcohol.
  • The Council unanimously approved an ordinance to establish permit requirements for film production.
  • The Council approved a contract with Lewallen Construction in the amount of $7,987,229.63 for the construction of Phase 1 of the Peachtree Creek Greenway project.
