City Council wrap up: Highlights from the Jan. 14 meeting

Brookhaven, GA, Jan. 14, 2020 – The Brookhaven City Council acted on several items in its Jan. 14 regular business meeting at Brookhaven City Hall:

  • The Mayor and City Council issued a proclamation honoring the dedicated public service of Police Major Don Chase, who served the final seven of his 33-year police career in Brookhaven Police.
  • The Mayor and City Council appointed Bates Mattison and Fred Andrew to the Brookhaven Development Authority. Council Member Madeleine Simmons was also appointed as an Ex Officio member.
  • The Mayor and City Council appointed Kevin Quirk and Cary King to the Brookhaven Planning Commission. Connor Sen was also reappointed to his post on the board.
  • The Mayor and City Council reappointed Stuart Marsden and Mike Dardano to the Board of Appeals.
  • The Council unanimously approved a change order for the Briarwood Park Pool Project with Waterworks Aqua Design LLC in the amount of $87,912 for the removal of unsatisfactory soil and the replacement with proper fill dirt.
  • The Council unanimously approved the extension of the Lowe Engineers contract at the 2019 prices, terms and conditions until December 31, 2020.
  • The Council unanimously approved a contract change for Optech RWM, LLC in the amount of $24,769 for additional park maintenance for LaVista Park and the new gateway monument located at Chamblee-Dunwoody Road at I-285.
  • The Council unanimously approved contracts not to exceed $102,000 for Professional Services for Peachtree Government Relations and Garst Thomas Public Affairs for legislative consulting services.
     
  • The Council unanimously approved a non-discrimination ordinance for private businesses, sponsored by Council Members Linley Jones and Madeleine Simmons. 
  • The Council unanimously approved a contract with Merrell Bros. in the amount of $1,800,000 for the purpose of dredging Murphey Candler Lake.  In a separate action, the council moved $800,000 from the General Fund Unassigned Balance to the CIP Fund to cover immediate expenses so work can begin immediately. These funds will be reimbursed to the General Fund from future SPLOST proceeds.
  • The Council unanimously approved the creation of the Brookhaven LaVista Park Special Tax District.
  • The Council unanimously approved the reauthorization of the Special Tax District of 166 acres located south of Interstate 85.
  • The Council unanimously approved a change order for the Ashford Dunwoody/Johnson Ferry intersection improvements in the amount of $55,969.
