City Council wrap up: Highlights from the Dec. 10 meeting

 

Brookhaven, GA, Dec. 10, 2019 – The Brookhaven City Council acted on several items in its Dec. 10 regular business meeting at Brookhaven City Hall:

  • The Mayor and City Council issued a proclamation honoring the seven years of dedicated public service of Council Member Bates Mattison, followed by a special slideshow presentation in his honor.
  • The Mayor and City Council held a public hearing on the proposed non-discrimination ordinance, sponsored by Council Member Linley Jones and Council Member-Elect Madeleine Simmons.  Following the discussion, the item was deferred until a meeting in January.
  • The Council held a public hearing and subsequently approved a rezoning and annexation of 676 parcels (approximately 2,000 residents) into the City of Brookhaven in what is believed to be the largest annexation using the 60% method in state history.
  • The Council held a public hearing on a rezoning from RS50 to RS50 at 1169 Dorby Park Drive to allow for a two-lot subdivision.  The measure was subsequently withdrawn
  • The Council held a public hearing and subsequently approved a rezoning and special land use permit at 3931 Peachtree Road for Medical Building Partners II, LLC to allow a building within 150 feet of Peachtree Road.
  • The Council held a public hearing and subsequently approved text amendments to Chapter 27 of the Zoning ordinance to implement changes, as called for in a routine audit recommended by the Zoning Ordinance Rewrite, adopted in November 2018.
  • The Mayor and City Council heard a presentation regarding an Open Container Ordinance led by Jeff A. Carlson of Corner Booth Consulting and Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce and Daniel New for the Georgia Restaurant Association.
  • The Council unanimously approved a deannexation of two properties that were split between the cities of Brookhaven and Chamblee so they can be wholly located in he City of Chamblee
  • The Council unanimously approved a change in the ethics ordinance to provide for correction of clerical errors. 
  • The Council unanimously approved to accept funding in the amount of $2,750,850 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and $366,7801 from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) to purchase specific floodplain properties through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP).                    
  • The Council unanimously approved a construction contract with SD&C in the amount of $150,000 for the Briarwood Road Multi-Use Path.
  • The Council unanimously approved a contract in the amount $305,000 with Autaco Development, LLC for sidewalk construction along Briarwood Road.
  • Mayor John Ernst and Mayor Pro Tem Joe Gebbia left the dais prior to the end of the meeting.  The remaining council members yielded the gavel to outgoing Council Member Bates Mattison, who adjourned the meeting.
