City Council wrap up: Highlights from the Aug. 28 meeting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brookhaven, GA, Aug. 30, 2018 – The Brookhaven City Council acted on several items in its Aug. 28 meeting at Brookhaven City Hall.

  • The Mayor and Council unanimously approved the appointment of Nancy Plesnarki to the Brookhaven Convention and Visitors Bureau.

  • The Council unanimously authorized an application to the Georgia Historical Society for a Georgia State Historical Marker for the Lynwood Park Recreation Center. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the closing of the school, which means that the building is now eligible for this historic designation. The City is working with the Lynwood Park Foundation to submit the application. Kathy Wells, a member of the Foundation, made a presentation to Council prior to the vote.

  • The Council unanimously approved the mid-year budget adjustments for the General Fund. There was no overall budget increase.

  • The Council unanimously approved to accept $200,000 in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant funding to offset the cost of streambank restoration on the north fork of the Creek, south of Murphey Candler Lake.

  • The Council unanimously approved Streetscape Design Standards with an amendment to adjust wood color and to address street signage at a later date.

  • The Council unanimously approved a motion directing City staff to hold off on enforcing the new alarm ordinance, which holds alarm companies accountable for false alarms, until its Dec. 11 meeting.

  • The Council approved changes to the alcohol ordinance that include replacing the Alcohol Board with a City Council-appointed hearing officer. The Council suspended the provision in the ordinance that prohibits sexually oriented businesses from selling alcohol, which rectifies issues identified in a recent court ruling. The suspension will be lifted after Dec. 31, 2020.
