Brookhaven, GA, June 26, 2019 – Brookhaven’s new Public Safety Building, to be located on a 19-acre tract of land at 1793 Briarwood Road, moved closer to becoming a reality Tuesday night when City leaders approved the project’s construction contract. The Braselton-based firm of BM&K Construction & Engineering will build the new facility.

Due to be completed by the summer of 2021, the new public safety building will be a welcomed addition to the Brookhaven landscape. It will feature state-of-the-art amenities and room to grow for the Brookhaven Police Department (BPD) and Municipal Court, whose full and part-time staff are currently crowded into a rented building near the Atlanta city limits. The current 16,300 square feet facility at 2665 Buford Highway only has 54 parking spaces for a police department with 85 employees and a busy municipal court.

The new building will be twice the size of the current police headquarters with over 33,000 square feet and room for 168 parking stations. As an added bonus, the Public Safety Building will be located adjacent to the signature trailhead for the Peachtree Creek Greenway. This proximity of police to the greenway will provide enhanced security for the area.

“The addition of this new building reflects the City’s vision to invest in and grow our physical resources to meet the needs of the residents and employees,” said Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst. “The new public service building plays an important dual role: to provide adequate space for the BPD and Municipal Court and serve as a safety guardian at the trailhead of the new Peachtree Creek Greenway. The old facility had long been inadequate in terms of accommodating our police and court system. Not only will we now be able to meet these needs, but this new facility should prove to be an important catalyst for redevelopment in this area of the City.”

BM&K Construction & Engineering’s skillfully crafted designs can be found on roadways, parks, transportation facilities, EMS and fire stations, correctional facilities, office buildings, and high-rise multi-family structures throughout Georgia. They have provided successful management of a wide array of projects, including the new Dunwoody City Hall, Georgia DOT, Jackson County Fire Training Center, the Heard County Administration Building, and Chateau Élan Winery & Resort renovation.

The construction contract for $15 million facility is funded with SPLOST proceeds, approved by voters in November 2017.  An additional $3 million is estimated for furnishings, fixtures equipment, project management and other expenses related to moving into the new facility.

The City already owned the property where the building will be located.  The property was acquired with funds from the Community Investment Agreement with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, announced in December 2017.

The building will be outfitted with amenities that coincide with the Sustainable Brookhaven initiative including having geothermal heating and cooling, and high-efficiency glass windows.  The property will also have EV charging stations available for public use and for electric police vehicles.

An official groundbreaking for the new building will be held later this year. Watch for details about the event.
