Brookhaven acquires new Briarwood Park and Rec gateway

Brookhaven acquires new Briarwood Park and Rec gateway

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New amenities will be a short walk from the Drew Valley neighborhood

Brookhaven, GA, Jan. 26, 2021 – At its Jan. 26 business meeting, the Brookhaven City Council authorized the Mayor to move forward with a land acquisition which will give greater access to the Briarwood Recreation Center and nearby park and pool facilities.

The move helps Brookhaven achieve its goal of making all parks accessible within a 10-minute walk from everywhere in Brookhaven, while also resolving some potential legal exposure with recent construction of the new Briarwood pool.

This is a result of a settlement with the property owner who allegedly experienced stormwater runoff damage during recent construction,” said City Manager Christian Sigman.  “As we were looking at the claim, we discovered that there was a real opportunity to establish greater pedestrian access to one of Brookhaven’s signature park facilities.  It turned out to be a win-win scenario.”

The property at 2248 Drew Valley has an anticipated cost of $495,000 and will add another quarter acre to Briarwood’s 16-plus acres of greenspace and parkland.  The house on the property will be removed to provide for an adequate park gateway from the Drew Valley subdivision once all construction activities are completed.
